Метод такого планирования порядка выполнения задач проекта, который обеспечивает завершение его в минимальные сроки.
Существуют программы, которые позволяют автоматизировать процесс определения критического пути.

Центральное понятие методов сетевого планирования и управления (СПУ) - непрерывная последовательность ра бот и событий от начального до конечного события, требующая наибольшего времени (в некоторых системах — наибольших затрат) для ее выполнения. Собственно, смысл СПУ как «метода критического пути» состоит в регулярном нахождении такой последовательности на каждом этапе комплекса работ, планируемого этим методом. (Обычно для этого проводятся компьютерные расчеты). Знание К.п. позволяет сосредоточить на соответствующих работах дополнительные силы и средства, и тем самым сократить этот путь, ускорить достижение общей цели комплекса. На рис.С.2 к статье Сетевой график, где дан пример такого графика, цифры, стоящие над стрелками, показывают ориентировочную продолжительность каждой работы. К.п., определяющий общую продолжительность строительства (или иного комплекса работ, планируемого с помощью графика), показан утолщенной линией. Он проходит от нулевого (начального) до 12-го (конечного) события. События 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 11, лежащие на этом пути, называются критическими, работы — критическими работами, соответствующие ресурсы — критическими ресурсами. Кроме критических из всех работ и путей обычно выделяются «подкритические», за которыми следят особо, потому что уже при небольших отклонениях в сроках выполнения такие работы становятся критическими. Совокупность всех критических и подкритических работ называется критической зоной комплекса.
